Watauga Lake - Electrofishing 2017

Sampling date: May 2 - 3, 2017
Species collected in survey (20 runs, 5.0 hrs total effort):

Largemouth Bass = 33
Smallmouth Bass = 85
Spotted Bass = 92
Black Crappie = 2
Black-nose Black Crappie = 1

The largemouth bass catch rates for Watauga Reservoir were below average in 2017 at 6.6 fish/hour. This is possible due to the difficulty in sampling on the reservoir because of very high water levels. However, a PSD value of 88 would indicate that the reservoir size structure is dominated by larger fish. There was also a good percentage of largemouth bass collected over the 12-inch MLL. Largemouth bass relative weights were about average for Watauga Reservoir.

Smallmouth bass catch rates were slightly below average at about 17.0 fish /hour. There was a large percentage of fish collected over the 15-inch MLL (61%).This should give anglers plenty of keeper size fish to catch. Smallmouth bass relative weights were about average for Watauga Reservoir.
